David deVillier is a narrative artist. His work is poetry expressed through image, a story told through pictures and symbols. The figures and objects in deVillier's work often exist in ambiguous settings or deconstructed environments that serve as a stage for implied drama. With enigmatic figures, unexpected animals, ambiguous scenes of nature, and disparate household objects, deVillier challenges the viewer's perceptions of meaning and tells stories without being didactic. And although these symbolic elements find their origin in the life and mind of the artist, they also serve as an essential stimulus for the viewer’s personal interpretation, an understanding found in their own experience and history. There is no single answer to or correct interpretation these works, only the meaning the viewer can find within him/herself. David deVillier was born in Opelousas, Louisiana. He earned a BFA from Louisiana State University in 1983 and an MFA from Yale University in 1987. He has taught at arts centers and universities around the northwest United States for over twenty years and continues to paint at his studio in Ketchum, Idaho. |
