"Experiencing large cities such as New York and Chicago has inspired my work immensely. I have a gained a love and respect for New York City. It is difficult to express how if feels to be engulfed in its entirety. My latest work involves roof top views at dusk, the water towers of the west side, and the endless neighborhoods found in Queens and Brooklyn.
"Even though a particular area may influence my paintings, they often begin to generate their own world. My objective is not to characterize a given location, but to create a visual language that articulates an emotional experience. I work from photos, drawings, imagination and on location when possible. Often the painting evolves on its own before I use any reference material. "I strive to ignore both traditional and contemporary conventions of painting. I believe that more than one 'visual language' can exist simultaneously in a painting. In other words, I try to explore what paint can do, as its vocabulary is endless. Experimentation is what fuels my motivation to make art. If I knew what to expect, it would become very mundane. Therefore, I have done away with all expectations toward what the finished painting should look like." |
