Artist Statement

The pure, frank sentiments we hold in our hearts are the only truthful sources of art.

Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), German Romantic Painter

My paintings are about the experience of light and shadow, color and texture--the play between the seen and the unseen. When painting outdoors, on location, I edit freely, combining what is there with what is not there, letting memory and imagination be my guide.

I am most inspired by the quiet drama of nature; trees bending towards the light, silent reflections, sunlight breaking through clouds. My imagery suggests a personal history—whether it's memories of childhood summers spent on Jekyll Island, Georgia with the marsh and live oaks or of more recent travels to Italy and France where art and history are inseparable and where there is a nearly universal respect for that which is natural and life-sustaining.
